The Decade is Almost Over, so that means that all nerds make list of the greatest things of the decade. Time to get the list of your favorite records, books, movies, and blah blah blah ready. It is a great time to reminisce on how awesome the decade was, or lament at how terrible it was and things are not the way they were all those moons ago. Let's all miss the magical time we call the 90's. I will be pointing out how lame all of the list, and the people who make the list are, while making my own list. This Internet gives much access to online blog list, and if you read them you will suddenly feel very disenchanted with society, you may even think to yourself that if the youth of today really admire some of these things that are on the list, then what does that mean for the pool of talent that we are expecting to test the limitations of each genre of art/music/literature, moving it forward and changing the world for the better. I will outdo them by showing that I am better because of the things I like. In the meantime, peruse the information superhighway, remember back to 10 years ago when AOL was the shit, make your list, and remind yourself of how awesome you are. And no it is not a false sense of security.

Obama was black before the election

Obama, who may be the 2nd greatest president of all time when all is said and done (he just had lunch with the first) (in no way is any of this a joke Brian), was on the Letterman show. He made the statement "I was black before the election." It was funny. It was in reference to Jimmy Carter bringing up the point of racism in the current Presidents daily ventures on Capitol Hill. Times New Viking has a new record out called Born Again Revisited. This release snuck by me, I had no idea that they were even working on a new album, I thought it was just an e.p., also I thought I was lucky enough to score one of the few copies of this e.p., turns out there were more than just a few copies. Anyway, this record sounds great, if there is one thing about TNV, it is consistency, they are lo-fi pop, and a lot of times, they are lo-fi other things. If you are a fan, go and get, you will not be let down. Even more, see them live, do a drug or two while seeing them live (all of my friends are doing it*), it is a good time, they are great, even without drugs.

Patrick Swayze, star of Road House (one of the greatest theatrical achievements in the history of ever), has moved on to other things after his battle with pancreatic cancer. We shall all watch Ghost, Dirty Dancing, Donnie Darko and then Road House (watch Road House last so that you can feel awesome again) in his honor. He also called Kanye West a Jackass before he passed (he didn't actually say that to my knowledge, but I am sure, 100% sure, that James Dalton would have just before he ripped out his throat). This is a sad day. You will be missed Sir Swayze.

The exploitation of the Beatles, I can assume, is welcome by the Beatles. But Beatles Day on 9-9-9 (get it), is a bit much for my spirit to consume. The re-release of their whole catalogue in re-mastered form is ri-diculous (see what I did there). The whoring out of the worlds favorite pop band includes the release of Rock Band Beatles edition of whatever the fuck it is, VH1 airing documentaries, Pitchforkmedia only reviewing (all) Beatles albums the past few days (this reasserts pitchforks position as being just awful, going beyond cementing it, but fossilizing it) (in your face pitchfork). Do we really need these marketing schemes to remind us of the Beatles and their place in history, and also is it really that bad to forget about the Beatles altogether sometimes. It would not be that bad, no it really would not. Of course the resurgence of Beatles paraphernalia every few years probably says more about our current state of mainstream pop music than it does about a force fed obsession, and that I am not going to discuss, because the message is obvious (current pop music is uninspiring so we constantly have to dig the Beatles or the Stones out of studio closets to remind us of a time when you did not have to search through the abyss to find something creative, it was there on the radio, and radio was good). This week has allowed many esteemed musicians to sound off on their appreciation for the band, musicians like Jonas Bros, other prepubescent ass faces, and the Jonas Bros. I love hearing the youngins talk about seeing Beatles records in their grandparent’s collection. I would feel happiness if someone would bang bang shoot shoot them ( I win).

Polvo Again...

The new polvo record is out, I have not purchased it, but it sounds o.k., at times, at other times it sounds really good. I am listening to for the first time at the moment, so this is the initial reaction. Initial response is that if you have never really gotten into Polvo, this record is your bridge to Polvoness. It definitely has elements of listenability that previously were not part of the groups repertoire, and for me, that lack of listenability, or accessibility was part of the fucking awesome. Even though this album comes with more accessibility, it seems as if Ash and co. have become even better at what they do. It is impossible to weigh this record against previous milestones (cor-crane secret etc.), and also improper to do so. I can say that for first time listeners of Polvo, this is your record. For fans of Polvo, if you purchase the album, it is yours also, and you will enjoy it. If your not a picky prick douche bag, then you can find the goodness in it. I am normally a very picky prick douche bag, I am working, albeit not to hard, and I am really liking it. It's major faults being that sometimes you can see the car advertisements, or Monday night football promos before they actually happen. You can get past it simply because they are an amazing band and this record shows that. Nic, (the only reader of this blog) you need to get this, or ask me if you can listen to it.

Polvo is back on Merge. Good for them. Polvo is also at the Southgate house on Friday Sept. 4 (the day before the Louisville Vintage Motorworks Swap Meet). Polvo is releasing a new album called In Prism. If you do not like Polvo then you are stupid (your not really stupid), if you have never heard of Polvo then you are not guilty of stupidity because of ignorance. They are releasing a new album on Sept 8. You can listen Beggars Bowl now over at Stereogum. It is good, of course nothing compared to the older Polvo. It is still technical, maybe a little to polished. But they are very missed. Maybe my opinion will change. Anyway, the show will be great.

Sonic Youth

The Eternal. I have owned this record since the day it was released (June 9, 2009). I listened to Sonic Youth as a teen passively. I did it because all of my friends were doing it, sort of the same way my addiction to asprin started. I started dating the woman I love and she loves Sonic Youth. I whipped out my old copies of Goo and Dirty and Daydream Nation (I am fairly certain that over all of those years I only listened to them a handful of times), I went through her collection of Sonic Youth albums, and realized I had been missing out. Now I love Sonic Youth, they are safely one of my favorite bands now.
So anyway, The Eternal. As a convert, I was really looking forward to this release. I went back and purchased Rather Ripped and Murray Street, those were both really good, yet I did not know what to expect. One main reason for this is that I was reading that it was going to be a black metal inspired album, this sounded strange to me. I purchased the record, and I liked it. I have a problem of declaring albums to be the greatest thing known to man after having only owned them for a week, then becoming bored with them. With this record I was afraid it was going to happen. I gave it a few passive listens and then set it aside for a few months. Luckily my mp3 player in my car has a shuffle mode. Serendipity took over. The result: Holy Fucking Shit Man. This album is actually as good as I origionally thought it was. It is going into any new areas for Sonic Youth, it is not Black Metal or even metal at all. It is Sonic Youth in stride. No one else can do Sonic Youth, I feared they may lose the ability to do Sonic Youth. They did not miss a beat and I will be listening to this record until ultimate doom comes to greet me.

I love Vampire Moves. I love Vampire Movies just as much. I don't love Ethan Hawke anymore (he did use to be more tolerable). There is a new movie that involves both Vampires and Ethan Hawke. It is called Daybreakers, here is the trailer. If it involved vampires and the death of Ethan Hawke that would be great, but this is only the trailer, they won't tell a thing like that, as glorious as it may be. It is a movie involving vampires and violence. I think I will see it.

Inglourious Basterds

I saw it. I am not sure what to think. It was not bad. I wanted it to be bad. I love Brad Pitt (say what you want Nic and Brian), but I wanted to hate the character that I saw in the trailer of the film. The overdone southern accent, the shitty delivery of the cliche, somehow he pulled it off. I wanted to think it was going to be an over exaggerated bloody mess. It was not. It was bloody, and that was to be expected, but it was not as bloody as I expected. I am completely lost as to how I should feel about the movie. I don't want to give anything away so I will not go into detail about certain points that I want to elaborate on. I really do want to elaborate on them though. I will say, if you wait for DVD you would not be missing much, but you do want to see it. I will see it again. And next time I come down on it with the hammer of Thor, but for now, I just don't know. All I can say is that I wanted to not like it, and I did not completely not like it. I don't know what to say, so this was pointless.

Alia Shawkat, Maeby to everyone that knows her, has signed on to play "Robin" (the bass player) in a movie about the Runaways (there was no one named Robin in the Runaways). For the time being the movie is entitled The Runways, apparently Joan Jett has sued a former band mate for trying to block the film. She should have sued over the fact that Kristen Stewart (drugs are not bad, she is horrible-bad-awful) is playing the role of Jett in the film. Anyway, good for Maeby. Now lets all go listen to Cherry Bomb.

The Cave Singers-Welcome Joy
This is much in the same vein of Invitation Songs. Some songs sound like they are just reworkings of songs from the previous album. So the fuck what. The ground does not always need to be broken. This is such and easy album to listen to. It puts you at ease and allows your mind to drift. Beautiful melodies. No worries here. Get it.
Woods-Songs of Shame
This has a folky/chamber/pieces of rock thrown in/ thing going on. This is a very steady album. I have not had any problems getting through this one several times over the weekend. You do find yourself identifying influences as you listen, which leads me to expect more around on the next album, after they have had time to fine tune some things that they could make a little more their own. Don't be mislead though, this will be on repeat in this household.

Today Fleetwod Mac saved the day

Fleetwood Mac. They are just like one of those friends that you haven't spent much time with lately, but just radomly ran into, and then you realize how awesome they are, and you wonder why you don't hang out with them more. When I was in my early teens my mother gave me free reign over her record collection. What was in that collection shaped a large part of my musical life. It had your Talking Heads, your David Bowie, your Rolling Stones, and to top it all off, that same year for Christmas my dear mother bought me my first hip hop albums, The Boogie Monsters and Craig Mac. What a mind shaping time for that young savant. Anyway, Fleetwood Mac's Rumors was in the record collection. It was not a record she played all of the time, like the Talking Heads or The Police. I played it and became obsessed. Completley obsessed. I thought Lindsey Buckingham was the shit, and I had sex with Stevie Nics (just like MicK Fleetwood) ( I didn't really have what many of you would consider actual sex, but I would have). I don't know much about the origional band, but I love the Buckingham/Nicks version. Today, riding in the car, I found a Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits Disc 1 cd, I listened to it, and the world was good. Go find your old favortite record, dust all fo the old girlfriends/boyfriends, booze/drug filled nights, or whatever else was going on while you were listening to the record, and fall in love with that shit again. It may save the day.

Blindness

I don't know what I was expecting from this movie. I did not want to read any reviews, and the previews did not give any reason to rush to theatres, so I didn't. Last night, however, I did view Blindness, the movie based on Jose Saramago's great fucking book. After a book like that and the sensation that is gives, you know somewhere deep down, before you hit play, that the theatrical version is going to let you down. With that belief, in being let down, you are essentially not let down. I knew it would not live up to the book and it did not. Do Read The Book. It is a great examination into the nature of humanity. Seramago is an amazing writer and you will find yourself trying to turn away from the images that he puts in front of you, but unable too because it is too late, he has sucked you in.

A book of Poetry by Seamus Heaney (called Electric Light). This was purchased for me two years ago by They Lady That I Love. I read it little by little and little by little, I realize Mr. Heaney is allergic to being not fucking brilliant. It is not ground breaking, it is not his best work, it is still Seamus Heaney amazing. He takes you back through his life in this, as he has done before, but in this, it is an older, wiser poet, reflecting on the past, at times the past of a younger, more brash writer. I like it.

Before Night Falls-the movie about Reinaldo Arenas. Staring Javier Bardem and there is a little Johnny Depp in that shit as well. Really very good. Based on Arenas autobiography of being a gay poet in revolutionary Cuba. Really, so very good.

Schnabel also directed Basquiat, with Jeffrey Wright and David Bowie. It is about the life of Mr SAMO.

And the Diving Bell And the Butterfly. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDENDED. The woman that I am in love with had me watch this. It based on the book written by Jean-Dominique Bauby. The book is his memoirs after his stoke. After said stroke he only retained the use of his left eye. A Speech Language Pathologist (just like the profession of the woman i love), worked with him, and with only the use of his this one eye, she dictated his story of the trauma. AND YOU SHOULD READ THE BOOK AS WELL. Fucking great.

Oh yes, Michael Wincott is in two of the four of these films. If you don't know ihim, learn him and his films

Add julian Schnabel to your repitoire of things you know. You will benefit. out of any emotion that you will feel from his films (i.e. happy, sad, mad, triumph), overwhelmed is what i always feel. He is amazing. Sometimes the feeling of being overwhelmed is very subtle, but it is there, and it reverberates for many, many moons mi amigos.

If you are into music, and find a lot of your music through those tricky websites that have music journalist trying very hard to come off as a mix of Lester Bangs and Ernest Hemingway, you can stop. This website is not new, and it is not too much of a secret, but it is amazing. 75orless.com, that's right, 75orless.com. They review albums in 75 words or less. There is no rating scale, which for me is more than welcome, since it seems that those numbers have become more of a gimmick for a website or magazine advertising boost than actually hold any relevance to the music involved. I am not going to get into a gripe session about how I feel that media outlets have become pawns of an industry, giving us the what without the why. 75 or Less gives you the why, short and sweet, letting you discover the what, as in what it measures up to in your mind, or what it is worth to you. They also seem to not follow with the trends, as many of the number toting, record raters do. Even if there is a bad review, you can often find key phrases within the writeup that lets you know if the record is something that you may like (you have to read a review to understand, I am not going to tell you more). Just go there, check it out. It uses words instead of numbers, so learn how to read.

Amazing site! Based in Rock Island, Illinois, artist that are on tour stop in and record alternate takes, or even unreleased songs in the Daytrotter studio. They release a new set each day. Bands such as Wire, The Cave Singers, Fog, Jay Bennet, Daniel Johnston, Deerhoof, Delta Spirit, and the Thao Nguyen (which is all me and my lady listened to in Hawaii), and on and on and on. The audio can be stream or downloaded @ NO COST. That means it is all free, and that is good, in case you did not know that free meant good. You will not be let down and my find yourself spending several hours a week going through the session archives. They even send out a weekly newsletter via email, it is worth getting.

Definitely Check out Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers, and after that find a way to listen to her old band Beat the Devil, way to short of a time together, find this if you can, ,sad to say they are not on daytrotter, but should not be too hard.

And I would try to escape to my hideouts, for I was certain that I would never learn how to write.

I did not Expect, either, to learn that though bones fall into dust, and dozens of years pass, there is still the same presence.

That we could, as we do, live in the realm of eternal mirrors, working our way at the same time through unmowed grasses.
